The purpose of intercropping is to promote positive biological interactions between plants. ecological principles that govern can be relevant across various species combinations and environments. Abstract Intensive agriculture often comes at the expense of soil health. A shift towards practices that foster health will support yield and defences against pests diseases. Growing crops in monoculture is standard modern agriculture, though strip‐cropping, which different are planted strips, a promising strategy transition sustainable agriculture. Increasing crop diversity hypothesized to positively influence arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), thereby enhancing health, but mechanisms by AMF‐plant symbioses contribute higher yields reduced pest populations strip‐cropping systems remain unclear. We used green‐house experiment with potato plants explore legacy effects mono‐cropping versus systems, AMF inoculation aphid infestation on root colonization, induction plant (untargeted LCMS‐based metabolomics), population size yield. found grown had colonization than soil. Potato also shoot nitrogen content, increased solamargine levels, populations. was only enhanced addition commercial soils. metabolites were affected soil, including jasmonic acid (JA) derivatives. Structural equation models revealed directly negative direct effect JA precursor OPC‐8, hydroxyJA‐glucosides, indicating complex soils JA‐inducible defences. Indirect benefits tuber mediated their positive content. Our results emphasize potential enhance field. show alter metabolome ways suppress Strip‐cropping result diversity, neighbour edge resulting from management practices. While supresses still need be identified, our study underscores for control via processes. Read free Plain Language Summary this article Journal blog.
