Abstract The scalloped hammerhead shark, Sphyrna lewini , is a Critically Endangered, migratory species known for its tendency to form iconic and visually spectacular large aggregations. Herein, we investigated the population genetic dynamics of across much distribution in Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP), ranging from Costa Rica Ecuador, focusing on young‐of‐year animals putative coastal nursery areas adult females seasonal aggregations that northern Galápagos Islands. Nuclear microsatellites partial mitochondrial control region sequences showed little evidence structure suggesting hammerheads this ETP comprise single stock. adults were not comprised related individuals, kinship does play role formation repeated, annual gatherings at these remote offshore locations. Despite high levels fisheries exploitation ETP, here greater diversity compared with conspecifics other parts species' global distribution. A phylogeographic analysis available, globally sourced, sequence data ( n = 1818 sequences) revealed three distinct matrilines corresponding major world ocean basins, highlighting need conservation evolutionarily unique lineages. This study provides first view properties aggregation, largest sample size‐based investigation phylogeography date.

In the Tropical Eastern Pacific dolphinfish (TEP) Corypahena hippurus is part of commercial, recreational, and artisanal fisheries also caught incidentally by tuna purse-seine longline fisheries. Defining existence differenced populations in exploited species for being considered independent management units crucial conservation plans. However, there a great uncertainty about population genetic structure across TEP. To investigate it to identify possible purposes this study was carried out, based on two SNPs datasets 3867 3220 young year (YOY) adult individuals, respectively, obtained through NGS protocols. Sampling covered species’ range distribution structured into YOY individuals order discard effects migrating sampled locations. Our results revealed slight but significant differences among locations occupying latitudinal limits at transitional areas between tropical subtropical waters. These are characterized strong seasonal variations sea surface temperature limit prevalence these extremes. Genetic seem be related spatial separation as northernmost (Los Cabos) southernmost (Peru) including set oceanic samples, showed highest levels differentiation. Whereas were detected barriers gene flow spatially separated probably site fidelity, clear limitations Mexico Central America observed circulation area. Design strategies countries where explored primary interest preserve resources. It necessary define that highly dependent environmental factors limiting its distributional case dolphinfish.

Globally, hammerhead sharks have experienced severe declines owing to continued overexploitation and anthropogenic change. The smooth shark Sphyrna zygaena remains comparatively understudied compared other members of the family Sphyrnidae, despite its Vulnerable status, a comprehensive understanding genetic landscape lacking. present study aimed conduct fine-scale genomic assessment within highly dynamic marine environment South Africa’s coastline, using thousands single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) derived from restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (3RAD). A combination differentiation-based outlier detection methods (OUTFlank pcadapt) Genotype-Environment Association (GEA) (Redundancy Analysis) analysis in were employed. Subsequent assessments putatively adaptive loci revealed distinctive south east cline. Amongst these, notable correlations between variation sea-surface dissolved oxygen salinity, addition spatial factors evident. Conversely, 110, 965 neutral SNP markers lack regional population differentiation, finding that remained consistent across various analytical approaches, including an isolation-by-distance (IBD) isolation-by-environment (IBE), clustering analyses (LEA, fastSTRUCTURE, find.clusters), discriminant principal components (DAPC). These results provide evidence for presence differential selection pressures limited range, high gene flow implied by selectively dataset. This offers insights regarding potential impacts response fluctuating environmental conditions circumglobally distributed zygaena.
