As the demand for computing power increases, ecological footprint of data centers becomes a critical concern. Evaluating and mitigating this trend is essential to ensure sustainable future digital technologies. This paper addresses issue by comparing environmental impacts solar-powered edge center (SDC) with refurbished servers conventional (CDC). The comparison conducted using multicriteria life cycle assessment both types, focusing on indicators such as climate change, depletion abiotic resources, acidification, ionizing radiation, particle emissions. Our results indicate that, under reference design scenario, SDC achieves reduction in impact ranging from 11% 60% compared CDC. advantage maintained when scaling up centers. Further reductions, 92% some indicators, are possible leveraging characteristics increased solar energy use, grid integration, extended compute node lifetimes. analysis shows that overhead replacing components during server refurbishment minimal, 1% 6%, thereby reinforcing sustainability reliability SDC. comparative study illustrates potential yield positive outcomes. Finally, we discuss limitations improvements study, well challenges associated deploying CDC specific environments particular tasks.
