Abstract Blue-green infrastructure (BGI), combining semi-natural and engineered elements, offers multifaceted benefits like stormwater management, water purification, heat mitigation, habitat provision. However, current BGI designs prioritize engineering goals, overlooking its ecological potential. Here we advocate for integrating objectives into design to enhance performance biodiversity. Through an interdisciplinary literature review, emphasize the importance of species diversity, abundance, processes, improve resilience, lower management costs. We collaboration navigate trade-offs between objectives, ultimately enabling us engineer both with

Untreated stormwater is a major source of microplastics, organic pollutants, metals, and nutrients in urban water courses. The aim this study was to improve the knowledge about start-up periods bioretention filters. A rain garden pilot facility with 13 filters constructed from highway adjacent impervious surfaces used for irrigation ∼12 weeks. Selected plants (Armeria maritima, Hippophae rhamnoides, Juncus effusus, Festuca rubra) planted ten Stormwater percolated through containing waste-to-energy bottom ash, biochar, or Sphagnum peat, mixed sandy loam. Influent effluent samples were taken evaluate removal above-mentioned pollutants. All efficiently removed microplastics >10 µm, most metals. Copper leached all initially but significantly reduced biochar at end period, while other showed declining trend. initially, concentrations decreased over time, had nitrogen after few To conclude, effectively pollutants during period. Before being recommended full-scale applications, functionality longer period operation should be evaluated.

Canals compose the arterial structure of irrigated agriculture, transporting free-surface flows to vast majority world's most productive farmland. Here we present a critical review and perspective studies that describe widespread serious issue seepage losses occur as move through this network watercourses. Such impact hydrologic setting pose challenges water conservation, agricultural productivity, quality. With an aim better understand characterization control irrigation canal in actual field settings, employing common methods (inflow-outflow, ponding, point measurements) canals with different perimeter types (earthen, or treated hard-surface, flexible membrane, compacted earth, polymer sealants) are considered. Information from 44 peer-reviewed journal articles (impact factor > 1.5) is summarized, synthesized, evaluated. Statistics measured categorized by units, measurement, type treatment indicate significant variation within across categories. Given site-specific conditions, reported rates also vary markedly, earthen ranging on order 0.1–1 m3/day per m2 area. We find much literature lacks consistent comparable reporting, only few providing both pre-and-post-treatment values for specific method assess effectiveness. Nevertheless, data achievable levels reduction about 50–95% methods. current state knowledge availability refined measurement devices protocols, recommend inflow-outflow standard technique characterization. Recognizing cost need flexibility allow groundwater recharge key deciding factors treatments, while acknowledging further investigation, consideration be given use sealants broadly promising means control.

Abstract Bioretention systems are a low-impact development (LID) measure to effectively control stormwater runoff and reduce pollutant concentrations. In this paper, three groups of bioretention cells with different filling materials (1# soil media (BSM), 2# BSM + 5% biochar, 3# +5% biochar +biological filler) were constructed analyze the removal characteristics microbial action under simulated rainfall conditions. Results showed that overall capacity was higher than system 1#, having lowest effluent concentrations 2.71 mg/L for total nitrogen (TN) 64.3 chemical oxygen demand (COD). The load reduction effect heavy metals ranked as > 1# 3#, average rates 80.3, 75.1, 84.8% Cu, Pb, Zn in 2#. Microbial community analysis indicated Proteobacteria Firmicutes absolute dominant bacteria systems, genera included Bacillus, Hyphomicrobium, Micrococcaceae, Nitrospira. addition, number denitrifying functional increased by 1.39 52.1% compared 1#.

To address the challenges of twenty-first century, particularly negative effects climate change, mitigation measures such as Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are being employed. Vegetation, a part various NbS interventions, provides different ecosystem services that help combat current climate-related vulnerabilities. This research aims to illustrate connection between plants’ contribution adapting change and creation more sustainable spaces, focusing on usage bioretention systems (BRs) an example NbS. Some main aspects how vegetation is selected for BRs according qualities may contribute developing landscapes, along with providing key features adaptation, taxonomic data, specific plant species have been demonstrated be good candidates planting in BRs, also discussed. Therefore, importance this paper comprehensive systematization insightful suggestions future BR implementation.
