The spatial mapping and prediction of groundwater quality (GWQ) is important for sustainable management, but several research gaps remain unexplored, including the inaccuracy interpolation, limited consideration geological environment human activity effects, limitation to specific pollutants, unsystematic indicator selection. This study utilized entropy-weighted water index (EWQI), LightGBM model, pressure-state-response (PSR) framework SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis address above gaps. normalized importance (NI) shows that NO3− (0.208), Mg2+ (0.143), SO42− (0.110), Cr6+ (0.109) Na+ (0.095) should be prioritized as parameters remediation, skewness EWQI distribution indicates although most sampled locations have acceptable GWQ, a few areas suffer from severely poor GWQ. PSR identifies 13 indicators environments activities SMP Despite high AUROCs (0.9074, 0.8981, 0.8885, 0.9043) across four random training testing sets, it was surprising significant uncertainty observed, with Pearson correlation coefficients (PCCs) 0.5365 0.8066. We addressed this issue by using spatial-grid average probabilities maps. Additionally, population nighttime light are key indicators, while net recharge, land use cover (LULC), degree urbanization lowest importance. SHAP highlights both positive negative impacts on identifying point-source pollution main cause GWQ in area. Due field, future studies focus six aspects: multi-method assessment, quantitative relationships between comparisons various models, application selection, development methods reduce uncertainty, explainable machine learning techniques management.

Abstract In attention to the Sustainable Development Goal 6, quality evaluation of water resources in Mexico is limited compared other regions. This study provided new data from Oriental Basin, an important socio-economic region with up 20% population growth over last decade by assessing groundwater Libres-Oriental aquifer (Ca–Mg–HCO 3 facies; F − : 2.5–9.9 mg/L; NO 75.3 mg/L) and Totolcingo Lake (Na–Cl 12.7–13.2 < 0.75 mg/L). Fluoride content grouped about 80% samples as promotor dental skeletal fluorosis. Nitrate Pollution Index suggested moderate pollution very significant 10% samples. Possible exposure older adults elderly pregnant women fluorosis all (Hazard Quotient > 1) Basin 55% them might also be causing infants suggest a potential health risk hotspot eastern-central Mexico. Even though did not contain enough cause methemoglobinemia, their boiling for drinking could enhance nitrate beyond WHO limit. Thus, mitigation techniques diminish risks consuming population.

Abstract uMhlathuze River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is a critical freshwater resource supporting industrial, agricultural, and domestic activities. However, its water quality under threat from various anthropogenic pressures. This review synthesises existing literature to assess the river’s quality, focusing on key contaminants, spatial temporal trends, ecological impacts, socio-economic implications. Key pollutants identified include elevated levels of nitrates (>10 mg/L), phosphates (>2 heavy metals such as lead (Pb > 0.01 mg/L) chromium (Cr 0.05 (Nsibande et al. Afr. J. Aquat. Sci. 2024, 262–274, 3.), microbial contaminants with faecal coliforms exceeding 1,000 CFU/100 mL (Mthembu al., Microbiol. Res. 2012, 2020–2026, 9.). Seasonal variations exacerbate these issues, higher pollutant loads observed during rainy periods due increased runoff urban areas. Figures illustrating contaminant trends by season or location could complement findings. The degraded has led declines biodiversity, including fish aquatic macroinvertebrates, poses significant public health risks for communities reliant river drinking sanitation. Maps pollution hotspots biodiversity loss would aid visualizing impacts. knowledge gaps inconsistent sampling methodologies, insufficient long-term data, absence region-specific Water Quality Index (WQI). highlights need standardised WQI frameworks, advanced monitoring technologies, tracking mechanisms address challenges. Additionally, studies community-based conservation initiatives are recommended mitigate impacts improve sustainability. These findings serve foundation targeted research policy actions protect sustainably manage system.

This study evaluates the water quality of Tamiš River, a tributary Danube, at Jaša Tomić and Pančevo hydrological stations from 2011 to 2016 2018 2022, using Water Pollution Index (WPI) seasonal analysis. The analysis revealed elevated nitrite orthophosphate concentrations both stations, with exhibiting extreme microbial contamination in 2015, attributed urban runoff, agricultural activities, inadequate wastewater treatment. Seasonal results indicate that while spring conditions align Class I standards, summer presents critical risks, especially Pančevo, where highest WPI value (26.47 2015) was recorded. Autumn shows stabilization, though sporadic peaks reflect impact nutrient runoff. Winter are marked by stability, favorable dissolved oxygen levels but occasional exceedances heavy metals, particularly Tomić. Increased suspended solids metals emphasize diverse pollution sources, including industrial discharges soil erosion. These findings underscore necessity integrated management strategies, such as treatment upgrades sustainable practices, mitigate pollution. Protecting River is crucial for supporting biodiversity, safeguarding public health, ensuring use this vital Danube tributary.
