Abstract The decommissioned fahlore Cu-Sb(-Ag) mine at Mt. Avanza (Carnic Alps, Italy) is a rare example of exploited ore deposits, as the tetrahedrite (Cu 6 [Cu 4 (Fe,Zn) 2 ]Sb S 13 ) main mineral found. This multi-compartmental geochemical characterisation approach provides one first case studies regarding behaviour and fate Hg, Sb, As, Cu, other elements in solid water matrices Hg atmosphere an environment affected by mining activity deposit. Elevated concentrations (Cu, Pb, Zn, Hg) associated with both (Zn-Hg)-tetrahedrite to minor minerals wastes, soils, stream sediments were observed. Concentrations waters greatly decreased increasing distance from area I geo index values testify highest levels sediment contamination inside area. Thallium Ge “lithogenic component” not sulfosalt/sulphide minerals. Although drainage often slightly exceeded national regulatory limits for Sb being more mobile than relatively low dissolved indicate moderate stability tetrahedrite. investigated district appeared similar cinnabar sites around world. Weak solubility but potential evasion gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) into also appear be characteristics ores. GEM are such that they do present pressing concern, real-time field surveys allowed easy identification sources, proving effective, suitable high-resolution indirect optimising soil sampling detecting wastes adits.

Mercury is easily transformed from the elemental state or numerous other mercury compounds to its gaseous form. The species remain in atmosphere for sufficient time be carried long distances. In many cases, some of these differences produce a bias experimental research, especially understanding soil-plant-atmosphere system polluted sites. main controversy concerns preferential uptake route plants and whether process reversible not. aims work described here were acquire better knowledge transfer routes ascertain plant reversible. Factors such as presence irrigation water evaluated using two common Castilla-La Mancha: vines ( Vitis vinifera, L.) olive trees Olea europea, L.). results provide evidence three important aspects: via roots does occur but it seems minor; involves continuous exchange at leaf-atmosphere interface; bioaccumulation process. These findings have implications use biomonitors by restricting exposure times, phytoremediation, particularly soils.
