Air pollution poses a significant challenge to environmental sustainability and inhibits economic social development. In urban areas, the combined effects of high population density, industrial concentration, heat island effect make control even more complex demanding. Most studies on air focus specific sources or localized lacking systematic approach tailored unique conditions megacities. Herein, this study employs bibliometric analysis based Web Science (WOS) Core Collection, incorporating 3109 research articles pollution, including metropolitan areas megacities, published between 2000 2024. By constructing knowledge framework, reveals thematic networks evolutionary trends in field. The findings indicate that key themes, such as aerosols, quality, islands, have emerged focal points. These while relatively distinct, are interconnected, forming three-dimensional framework pollutants–health effects–monitoring, governance. Moreover, disciplinary network exhibits clear convergence trend, with shift from single-discipline interdisciplinary approach. terms international collaboration, bipolar structure led by United States China has taken shape. Through multidimensional identifies hotspots highlights critical role cooperation advancing control. addressing gap cross-disciplinary, multi-perspective research, work enhances overall understanding policies provides valuable insights for promoting global sustainability.
