Major depressive disorder is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder. Despite an extensive range of treatment options, about third patients still struggle to respond available therapies. In the last 20 years, ketamine has gained considerable attention in field as promising depression, particularly who are resistant or at high risk for suicide. At subanesthetic dose, produces rapid and pronounced reduction symptoms suicidal ideation, serial appears produce greater more sustained therapeutic response. However, mechanism driving ketamine's antidepressant effects not yet well understood. Biomarker discovery may advance knowledge action, which could turn translate personalized effective strategies. brain systems level, neuroimaging can be used identify functional pathways networks contributing by studying how it alters structure, function, connectivity, metabolism. this review, we summarize appraise recent work area, including 51 articles that use resting-state task-based magnetic resonance imaging, arterial spin labeling, positron emission tomography, structural diffusion spectroscopy study clinical changes 24 hours longer after populations with unipolar bipolar depression. Though individual studies have included relatively small samples, different methodological approaches, reported disparate regional findings, converging evidence supports leads neuroplasticity contribute relevant its effects.
