The Lived Experiences of Puerto Rican Mental Health Professionals Who Provided Postdisaster Counseling Services to Children DOI

This photovoice study explored the lived experiences of nine Puerto Rican mental health professionals who provided postdisaster counseling services to children. Due complex and multilayered professionals, this used intersectionality as theoretical lens facilitate thematic analysis data. Results from coresearchers' narratives photographs generated seven major themes: (a) la politiquería disasters; (b) impact compounding (c) Rico se levanta: strategies for collective healing; (d) disasters on children; (e) with clients; (f) awareness, action, change; (g) supporting, connecting, transforming. Abstract Objectives Psychological reactions in response to disasters have been associated with increased mental health (MH) symptomatology, decreased quality of life (QOL), and post-traumatic stress (PTSD). This study provides a rare opportunity examine post disaster MH longitudinally sample adolescents. Methods From 2018-20, adolescents (12-18 years, N =228) were interviewed about exposure, QOL using the Adolescent Quality Life-Mental Health Scale (AQOL-MHS), psychological symptoms, diagnoses. The present study examined the associations between war-related exposure, nightmares, fear, insomnia, and PTSD symptoms among university students from Western Ukraine. An online cross-sectional was performed 1,072 (80% of whom were women) during war.
