Introduction Adolescent mental health has been an issue of global concern, and the adolescents in economically disadvantaged areas may require additional research. The research delves into factors associated with areas’ adolescent health, employing family systems theory, self-determination psychological reactance theory. Specifically, present study which was done Jingzhou country, area Hunan Province, China, aimed to examine link between parental control as well mediating roles problematic smartphone use this relationship. Methods A sample 1300 Chinese middle school students (620 girls, mean age = 14.22 ± 1.29) completed self-reported measures control, reactance, use, health. Results showed that negatively Psychological mediated association separately serially. Discussion findings enrich literature on parenting styles areas, provides intervention perspective reduce negative impact poor areas.
