Abstract Objective: To benchmark the university food environment and explore students’ experiences with insecurity healthy eating in order to inform interventions improve access affordability of foods for students. Design: A audit was conducted on campus using Uni-Food tool from April May 2022 comprised three main components, systems governance, facilities environment, retail outlets. qualitative study design also used conduct focus groups semi-structured interviews students key themes regarding their eating. Setting: Macquarie University, Australia. Participants: For 24 outlets component 29 domestic international enrolled at University. Results: The only scored 27% total all components audit. results showed need better governance leadership environment. suggested that barriers accessing were related availability, pricing, knowledge foods. Future intervention ideas included free fruits vegetables, relief, discounts, improved self-catering facilities, education, increased Conclusions: Improving measures are a core priority strengthen identified pricing availability as issues. These findings will effective feasible security campus.

Australia’s current food system does not equitably or sustainably feed all Australians. Coupled with the rising costs of essential goods, it raises concerns around cost living and security. This study aimed to investigate Reddit user perspectives on groceries in Australian subreddits. Posts related within subreddits were collected using Reddit’s Application Programming Interface (API) Python API Wrapper python package (version 7.7.1). (n = 1727) screened, included posts 583) underwent thematic analysis. users reported over increasing prices identified supermarket pricing tactics including price gouging, shrinkflation, misleading displays. also served as an important platform providing support a method disseminate budgeting strategies help others overcome living. The findings highlighted challenges faced by Australians managing grocery expenses they employ cope costs, emphasizing need for targeted interventions improve affordability accessibility.

Abstract Household income and caregiver mental health are important drivers of children’s development. The COVID-19 pandemic created huge economic disruptions. This study examines financial hardship its relationship with child using Australia’s only representative data spanning three years the pandemic. Analysis repeated, cross-sectional National Child Health Poll included 12,408 caregivers 20,339 children over six waves (June 2020–April 2023). Caregivers reported their (dichotomised into low versus not) deprivation (missing one or more eight essential items, for themselves (Kessler-6, poor each (Self-Rated Mental Health, poor/fair good/very good/excellent). Binary logistic models were fitted to predict marginal probabilities measures by deprivation, time. Results show that while decreased from 41% 34% period, increased 30% 35%. Poor peaked stay-at-home orders in 2021 before recovering. experiencing had higher rates throughout slower recovery compared those without hardship.
