Abstract Heterojunction constructions are usually used to promote the separation of photocarriers and improve photocatalytic activities. However, misuse confusion often occur in current research because there no unified rules for classification naming heterojunctions. In order avoid this problem, review summarizes standardizes heterojunctions, based on different band structure distribution two semiconductors heterojunctions transfer paths photogenerated carriers. Moreover, distinctions carrier behavior among O–scheme heterojunction, Z–scheme S–scheme heterojunction within type II clearly elucidated. Additionally, methodologies identifying types, including metal–ion photo–deposition, situ X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface photovoltage transient absorption cathodoluminescence spectrometry, summarized. This also highlights applicability various types across applications suggests future directions research.
