Abstract Context Cultural ecosystem services (CESs) play a critical role in maintaining and improving human well-being rapidly urbanizing landscapes. Few empirical studies, however, have comprehensively identified revealed the interactions between urbanization, CES supply, demand, subjective (SWB). Objectives The study aimed to understand human–ecosystem from bottom-up perspective through an analysis of residents’ perceived supply demand CESs SWB at different urbanization levels. Methods Questionnaire surveys including public participation GIS were adopted obtain provision CESs, importance peri-urban area Shanghai. Multiple statistical spatial analyses performed uncover their relationships. Results Residents cultural heritage education as highest CES, whereas aesthetic recreation demand. Urbanization had significant negative correlation with recreation, aesthetic, social interaction but positive heritage. demands significantly lower areas moderate level. In these areas, dominated by high supply–low low-degree matches, was lower. Conclusions variations CES–SWB relationship our indicate development trajectory social–ecological systems context urbanization. Thus, policies adapted local conditions are needed foster landscape sustainability areas.

Understanding the complex interactions between social and ecological systems is essential for effective management implementation of sustainable development. The Loess Plateau, located in northwestern China, an arid semi-arid region with intense human-nature conflicts. Therefore, this region's socio-economic development conservation have been a hot research topic. Since Grain to Green Program 1999, environment Plateau has significantly improved, achieved. In study, comprehensive framework was developed assess socio-ecological trends sustainability from 2000 2020, driving forces were explored at deeper level. We found that index fluctuated upward last 20 years, overall healthy direction. However, it worth noting social-ecological system showed spatial heterogeneity. significant vegetation restoration central part greatly improved local environment. At same time, moderate economic did not take up too many natural resources, so these areas high sustainability. addition, after analyzing forces, we conditions (e.g., flat topography, mild climate, precipitation) cover positive feedback on weather extremes due climate change activities carried out by humans effects Our results help identify drivers different regions thereby providing theoretical support formulation policies.

Abstract High‐quality urbanization and a healthy ecosystem are both the material basis for sustainable social development. However, tie between terrestrial health (TEH) is still unclear. Therefore, we assessed spatial temporal dynamics of TEH at 368 cities in China from 2000 to 2020, then explored their interaction driving mechanisms by autocorrelation analysis structural equation modeling. The results showed: (1) China's comprehensive index (UI) improved 0.08 0.10 contributing some national urban agglomerations such as Beijing‐Tianjin‐Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl Delta. (2) (EHI) also increased 0.67 0.68. Ecosystem vigor significantly, while organization resilience decreased. (3) EHI UI appeared be locally spatially dependent, path dependence was presented municipal scales. (4) At scale, positively relates EHI, which enhanced social, economic, topography factors. dominant drivers on varied among regions, all regions except southwest. Our study demonstrated that would promote implementing high‐quality development ecological management simultaneously, providing theoretical support management.
