Abstract The Arctic is an epicenter of complex environmental and socioeconomic change. Strengthened connections between non-Arctic systems could threaten or enhance sustainability, but studies external influences on the are scattered fragmented in academic literature. Here, we review synthesize how have been analyzed Arctic-coupled human natural (CHANS) Results show that affected by numerous nearby faraway, including global markets, climate change, governance, military security, tourism. However, apart from these infrequently focus CHANS analyses. We demonstrate research be enhanced gaps filled using holistic framework metacoupling (human–nature interactions within as well adjacent distant systems). Our perspectives provide new approaches to sustainability interconnected world.

Abstract Traditionally, ecosystem restoration has focussed on standard ecological indicators like water or habitat quality, species population abundance vegetation cover to determine success. However, there is growing interest in how might impact people and communities. For example, researchers have documented positive socio‐ecological links between human well‐being property value, natural hazard mitigation, recreation opportunity happiness. Furthermore, public health benefits from been linked support for programmes. Drawing this research, the United Nations declared 2021–2030 ‘Decade of Ecosystem Restoration’ set a goal promote more goals restoration. Nonetheless, still lack information extent which practitioners consider because many granting programmes only require monitoring. To explore design, implement measure success their projects, we used federally funded Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) as case study. Since 2010, GLRI awarded over $3.5 Billion 5300 projects across midwestern States, but it does not presently considerations. We performed an online survey targeting project managers with sample ( N = 1574). received 437 responses found that almost half goal, than 70% those who did believe they reached it. In comparison, 90% believed met goals. These perceptions impacts both nature suggest may already transcend traditional monitoring metrics could capture ‘unseen’ benefits. The balance between ecological conservation and economic development holds immense significance in crucial function zones. framework of Coupled Human Natural Systems (CHANS) offers a valuable tool to evaluate the synchronization natural subsystem human subsystem. This research presents case study that analyzes effectiveness strategies Nanling key zone China from perspective CHANS. findings reveal over last two decades, stability ecosystem services has coexisted with significant increase activities. correlation coefficient index (ESI) activity (HAI) decreased −0.6034 −0.6139, indicating continuously strengthening negative correlation. spatial differentiation nature also intensified. coupling coordination degree (D) increased 0.3259 0.3667, representing 12.50% improvement. suggests overall CHANS been enhancing. relationships ESI HAI were categorized into four groups. Among these, 21.3% areas fall positive trade-off quadrant, while 13.0% quadrant. Overall, climate factors promote trade-offs, activities trade-offs. Therefore, it is strengthen anthropogenic vegetation restoration reduce construction land expansion as important measures zone. As conclusion, despite intensity, remain stable. achieved remarkable results.
