Climate change is impacting farmers worldwide; none more so than the millions of smallholder who rely entirely on rain-fed agriculture. Adapting agricultural practices an important strategy to mitigate climate change's harmful impacts food security and livelihoods. Researchers have increasingly sought understand factors influencing farmer decision-making adaptation but application theories in low-income country contexts lacking. Therefore, we apply Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) examine intention adopt response based a survey 328 rural Madagascar. Using structural equation modeling (SEM) describe relationship between social connectedness (e.g., interactions with others about farming-related issues), PMT constructs (threat coping appraisal), adapt change, find that appraisal stronger predictor threat appraisal. Further, SEM results show significant negative – greater perceive be less threat. Additionally, as female are significantly socially connected male farmers, this study provides further evidence gendered vulnerabilities among smallholders. This research has implications for design policies interventions consider networks, critical reducing building capacity, supporting vulnerable populations.

This study explores the influence of social, environmental, governance, and other household factors on migration decision-making in hazard-affected coastal areas southwest India. Through nearly 900 interviews with households residing these vulnerable that have migrated elsewhere, this paper analyses determinants propensity for versus staying, as well voluntary immobility involuntary immobility. Logistic regression was used to distinguish significant factors. The results showed governance extent impact were most influential decision-making, while social relevant determining non-migrants. decision migrate found be strongly influenced by post-disaster rehabilitation assistance government, stay kind protection measures place. These insights implications planned relocation policies can leveraged design more effective interventions both immobile migrating populations.

Abstract Although migration–environment scholarship has experienced tremendous advancement in the past two decades, it continues to lack a historical perspective. This article proposes an integration of context into conceptual framework examine contemporary migration and non-migration decision-making as related aspects environmental change. We mainly engage potential for intergenerational aspirations capabilities enhancement lessons are passed on subsequent generations improve coping strategies face stress. apply lens case study coastal Bangladesh illustrate this perspective’s potential. Ultimately, we urge interdisciplinary collaboration between scholars associations historians, resulting historically informed research would have important implications research, theory, policy.

Coastal residents of Bangladesh are now confronted with the increased incidence, variability, and severity weather-related hazards disasters due to climate change-induced sea level rise (SLR). Many researchers hold view that as a consequence such area have either already migrated inland locations or intend so in near future. We examine migration households following flash flood event took place August 2020 address intentions for future Lower Meghna Estuary coastal Bangladesh. The data obtained this study include 310 household surveys, field observations, informal discussions respondents local people. Based on analysis data, empirical research found one other district within year after event. When were asked about their intensions, only tiny proportion, namely 21 (6.77%) households, likely will leave settle districts while remaining 289 stay Lakshmipur district. This finding challenges existing narratives vulnerability environmentally induced migration. Moreover, it provides evidence non-migration, which is new well thriving investigation relation

Floods are a frequent disaster in Bangladesh, and farmers the most at risk. Understanding how to improve farmers’ flood adaption is important reduce effects. Protection motivation theory (PMT) has been widely used examine adaptation behavior, but there still debate regarding quantitative effect of PMT factors on particularly geographically vulnerable context. This study integrates psychological aspects based assess adaptability. A cross-sectional survey was conducted collect data from 359 farmers. We employed structural equation modeling test model with mediation analysis. The results showed that who perceive higher risk feel more fear floods likely implement measures. Similarly, adopt adaptive actions if they have self-efficacy response efficacy. However, less take subject maladaptation. Maladaptation plays significant role as mediating variable. These findings will act recommendations for government agencies design policy measures strengthen management. supports protection understand behavior. further required enhance generalize existing model.

Abstract We conducted a systematic literature review of peer-reviewed full text articles on the nexus between human mobility and drought or heat published 2001 2021, inclusive. identified 387 relevant articles, all which were analysed descriptively using dictionary-based approach by an unsupervised machine learning–based Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model. Most in response to droughts (71%), but extreme temperature became more prominent after 2015. The drought-related focuses geographically African Southern Asian countries, while heat-related research has mainly been developed countries (mostly USA Australia). For both hazards, European are under-represented. LDA model 46 topics clustered into five major themes.
