Deforestation reduces the capacity of terrestrial biosphere to take up toxic pollutant mercury (Hg) and enhances release secondary Hg from soils. The consequences deforestation for cycling are not currently considered by anthropogenic emissions inventories or specifically addressed under global Minamata Convention on Mercury. Using modeling constrained field observations, we estimate that net fluxes atmosphere due 217 Mg/yr (95% confidence interval, CI: 134–1650 Mg/yr) 2015, approximately 10% primary emissions. If Amazon rainforest continues at business-as-usual rates, region will increase 153 2050 (CI: 97–418 Mg/yr), enhancing transport subsequent deposition aquatic ecosystems. Substantial reductions found two potential cases land use policies: conservation (92 Mg/yr, 59 234 reforestation (98 64 449 Mg/yr). We conclude deforestation-related should be incorporated as an source in inventories, policy could leveraged address pollution.

The Minamata Convention, a global and legally binding treaty that entered into force in 2017, aims to protect human health the environment from harmful mercury (Hg) effects by reducing anthropogenic Hg emissions environmental levels. Conference of Parties is periodically evaluate Convention's effectiveness, starting 2023, using existing monitoring data observed trends. Monitoring atmospheric levels has been proposed as key indicator. However, gaps exist, especially Southern Hemisphere. Here, we present over decade at Amsterdam Island (37.80°S, 77.55°E), remote southern Indian Ocean. Datasets include gaseous elemental oxidised species ambient air concentrations either active/continuous or passive/discrete acquisition methods, annual total wet deposition fluxes. These datasets are made available community support policy-making further scientific advancements.

In order to assess the influencing factors of presence mercury in a river within Savanna biome (Cerrado), we surveyed total (THg) bottom sediment from 50 lakes along 750 km Middle Araguaia floodplain. The sampling sites included non-urban and urban surroundings over three distinct geomorphologies. We measured water physicochemical parameters at each site tested statistically if land use nested geological formation influenced THg concentration sediments related parameters. Multivariate results indicate that interaction between groups is significant (p < 0.05).
