Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are important point sources for microplastics (MPs) in the environment. For effective mitigation measures and regulations, it is to monitor their release into environment understand level of MPs WWTP effluents based on different technologies. In this study, we compare MP levels three municipal WWTPs which each use a concept: conventional three-stage WWTP, one with an additional fourth cleaning stage using powdered activated carbon, two-stage utilizing membrane bioreactor (MBR). Long-term monitoring was performed same standardized methods sample collection, preparation, detection, fluorescent staining. Despite various advanced processes, there no significant differences resulting contamination investigation effluents. The average concentrations were 21.8 MPs/L 15.1 four-stage MBR. Further, all shows strong fluctuation over time.
