The scientific investigation of pain faces many challenges. I argue that one the central challenges posed by – its inherent complexity and supposed idiosyncrasy is best understood as an instance a more general issue in mind sciences: problem psychological integration. This label not yet explanation or account underlying challenge, but rather precise, empirically tractable formulation worry it arises multiple domains. In this paper first lay out substantive integration, focusing on both informational regulative aspects coordination control, then apply conception to peripheral elements sensory processing.
