Abstract
The
widespread
Neotropical
genus
Melocactus
of
approximately
42
currently
recognized
species,
is
most
diverse
in
eastern
Brazil
and
the
Greater
Antilles,
especially
Cuba.
Species
delimitation
notoriously
problematic
group,
although
this
due
part
to
a
lack
detailed
systematic
studies,
as
well
severely
cluttered
nomenclatural
history.
To
date,
no
comprehensive
phylogenetic
hypotheses
have
been
generated
for
clade,
some
population
genetic
morphological
studies
exist.
We
largest
dataset
date
based
on
plastome
data
derived
from
genome‐skimming
approach
26
taxa,
which
provided
framework
understanding
species
limits
relationships
among
Caribbean
species.
Our
time‐calibrated
phylogeny
revealed
mid‐Pleistocene
origin
,
we
resolved
three
major
clades,
Cuban
mostly
South
American
also
included
taxa.
topology
recovered
clade
sister
rest
placement
was
poorly
supported,

scattered

Abstract
The
Greater
Antilles
are
renowned
as
a
biodiversity
hotspot
and
known
to
be
geologically
complex,
which
has
led,
in
part,
the
generation
of
organismal
diversity
this
area.
One
most
species-rich
montane
groups
within
is
tribe
Miconieae
(Miconia
s.l.)
Melastomataceae,
with
ca.
325
species
found
there.
diverse
clade
Miconia
Caribbean,
Caribbean
clade,
composes
roughly
half
that
diversity,
an
estimated
160
species,
nearly
all
endemic
Antilles.
It
unclear
how
been
generated
through
time
or
where
it
originated,
but
we
now
have
sufficiently
well-sampled
robust
datasets
test
these
patterns.
Using
custom-built
plastome
dataset,
phylogenetic
hypothesis
for
106
members
tested
biogeographical
patterns
among
islands.
Our
results
suggest
originated
mid-Miocene,
probably
from
South
American
ancestor,
diversified
substantially
on
island
Cuba
before
repeatedly
dispersing
across
other
parts
Antilles,
especially
into
nearby
Hispaniola
then,
lesser
extent,
Jamaica,
