ABSTRACT The spittlebug Philaenus spumarius (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae) is the predominant vector of Xylella fastidiosa (Xanthomonadales: Xanthomonadaceae) in Apulia and Europe. Current control strategies insect rely on mechanical management nymphal stages insecticide application against adult populations. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are biological agents naturally attacking spittlebugs may effectively reduce population levels host species. Different experimental trials controlled conditions have been performed to i) identify occurring EPF P. Northwestern Italy, ii) evaluate potential for biocontrol isolated strains both spittlebug. Four species were from dead cadavers collected semi-field conditions: Beauveria bassiana, Conidiobolus coronatus, Fusarium equiseti Lecanicillium aphanocladii . All fungal isolates showed entomopathogenic (≈ 45 % mortality), except F. , preliminary trials. No induced mortality was observed stage. most promising fungus its pathogenicity nymphs further tested different formulations (conidia vs blastospores) with natural adjuvants. Blastospore formulation effective killing instars reducing emergence rate adults, reaching (90%) similar those commercial product Naturalis®, while no or adverse effect adjuvants recorded. encouraging results this study pave way testing field find new environmentally friendly vectors X.
