This article discusses the occurrence and measurement of self-regulated learning (SRL) both in human tutoring computer tutors with agents that hold conversations students natural language help them learn at deeper levels. One challenge building these is to accommodate, encourage, scaffold SRL because skills are not adequately developed for most students. Automated measures needed track progress meeting this challenge. A direct approach train on fundamentals metacognition SRL, which taken by iSTART, MetaTutor, other agent environments. An indirect promoting AutoTutor, student's knowledge based respond intelligently discourse moves promote SRL. fine-grained adaptivity considers cognitive states, interaction, emotional states a recent AutoTutor version.

Pedagogical agents – lifelike characters that guide users through multimedia learning environments are intended to facilitate the process. According social agency theory, presentation of cues (the image and voice agent) may prime interaction schema cause learner deeply process material. Research on pedagogical focuses mainly either role presence agents, by comparing agent no-agent groups, or design character, different groups. This article takes a comprehensive view combining both approaches in order answer question how should be designed so as promote motivation learning. It is argued not only mere presence, but also valence presented plays decisive role. Two experiments examine perceived appeal agent’s appearance voice. The results Experiment 1 indicate transfer performance, if they appealing appearance. inclusion yielded no effect 2 suggests high promoted performance. However, this advantage did occur when compared control group without an agent. two unappealing (appearance voice) even harmed transfer. result important modification theory.
