Pump-turbines experience complex flow phenomena and fluid–structure interactions during transient operations, which can significantly impact their stability performance. This paper presents a comprehensive field test study of the pump mode startup process for 150 MW prototype pump-turbine. By analyzing pressure fluctuations, structural vibrations, short-time Fourier transform (STFT) results, multiple stages were identified, each exhibiting distinct characteristics. These characteristics influenced by factors such as runner rotation, free surface sloshing in draft tube, rotor–stator interactions. The natural frequencies metallic components varied speed-up water-filling stages, potentially due to gyroscopic effects or stress-stiffening phenomena. opening guide vanes dewatering valve inside altered amplitude interaction frequency, transitioning vibration behavior from forced self-excited regimes. Interestingly, tube fluctuations exhibited that deviated existing prediction methods. substantial observed this help researchers deepen understanding pump-turbines operations identify more meaningful research directions.

The simulation of cavitation flow is sensitive to the turbulence model and model. To improve accuracy numerical simulation, a centrifugal pump with specific speed 56.5 taken as research object, Filter-Based Model (FBM) was used correct RNG Zwart-Gerber-Belamri (ZBG) model, Kunz Schnerr-Sauer were employed for in pump. According comparison, results calculated by ZGB 8% closer experimental predictions. occurs around impeller ring balance holes firstly, then vapor develops cover 80% blade suction side. By using Q-criterion, distribution vortex core region under different conditions investigated. volume high intensity severe condition 30%∼50% higher than that other conditions. Furthermore, radial force corresponds number blades, affects resultant direction impeller. With intensification cavitation, increases gradually, regularity will be disorder.
