Over the years, issues relating to corrosion have been a serious challenge confronting effective scientific and engineering applications of metallic materials in industry. Annual loss due has quite alarming as it runs into trillions dollars. In this review, forms corrosion, factors affecting each form, mechanism formation, different aggressive environments that propagate identified. Mitigation techniques against threat were all discussed, especially those involving use eco-friendly, cheap, available, non-toxic materials. It was observed principle, process, conditions governing form must be well understood before can effectively mitigated. This done either by proper material selection design, environmental measures, modification corrosive media, inhibitors, or sacrificial protective coatings. However, adequate knowledge environment nature metal deployed such an is essential ensuring material's protection, safety, durability. For efficient prevention control, these mitigation implored exclusively collectively depending on setting which will used.

Discovering new classes of organic corrosion inhibitors, such as expired drugs, can provide cheaper, low-toxic, and highly efficient alternatives to the toxic counterparts that serve an recycling or disposal strategy. Antihypertensive drugs constitute one cheapest globally, have been reported effective inhibitors for a variety metallic materials in various environments. The inhibition mechanism these generally, involves adsorption on surfaces formation protective film retards attack substrates by corrosive entities media. drug molecular structure usually contains π-bonds, phenyl rings, polar functional groups (such –NH2, –OH, –CN, −Cl) which influence electron density within inhibitor framework also facilitate metal surface. Generally, most antihypertensive act mixed-type obey Langmuir isotherm revealing physisorption mechanisms except telmisartan, losartan potassium, atenolol when used nitric acid. efficiency is generally above 90% with spironolactone having highest 98.1% at 30 °C.
