Abstract This work focuses on understanding the failure mechanisms of nylon-reinforced chopped carbon fiber (Onyx) composite and its reinforcement with printed using different infill patterns, i.e., solid fill, honeycomb, triangular via fused filament fabrication (FFF) to enhance sustainable manufacturing processes. The fill showcased a maximum tensile strength flexural ~ 300 MPa 22 which were more than twice that non-reinforced composites pull-out layer debonding as predominant mechanisms. On other hand, samples indicated matrix behavior. illustrated lower mechanism owing their higher bonding between each limited voids whereas honeycomb failed faster due high number limiting Furthermore, load transfer capacity was reduced adhesion layers. Although mechanical properties onyx-based do not make them suitable for structural applications, approach makes onyx potential material internal non-loading structures complex geometries.

Assessing new polymers for carbon fiber composite applications is critical due to a broadening demand in not typical existing fiber-resin systems. Polydicyclopentadiene, synthesized via Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP), performs exceptionally well high velocity impact applications, though it challenging reinforce with fibers given the unreactive nature of both and resin. In this work, we use surface modification approach promote fiber-matrix adhesion attachment small molecules able participate polymerization process. This strategy significantly improved flexural fracture properties, typically between 15-30%, relative composites reinforced unmodified fibers. Similarly, tensile yield strength ultimate were using strategy, decrease modulus was observed (<5%). Imaging surfaces shows clear difference adhesion, good noted fibres which had undergone modification.
