work

Wild
aromatic
plants
present
high
intra-
and
inter-population
chemical
polymorphisms
which
are
of
great
ecological
economic
interest;
however,
the
factors
influencing
phytochemical
diversity
remain
still
unexplored
for
many
species.
Here,
Teucrium
marum
L.
(Lamiaceae)
has
been
studied,
a
plant
endemic
to
western
Mediterranean
islands,
very
well-known
from
point
view
but
scarcely
investigated
regarding
that
influence
its
within
among
populations.
The
specific
aims
were
to:
1)
define
composition
variability
essential
oils;
2)
determine
inter-
intra-population
variability;
3)
evaluate
whether
elevation,
climatic
and/or
soil
substrate
determined

along
gradient
coastal
mountain
wild
populations
on
island
Sardinia
(Italy).
Fresh
aerial
parts
randomly
collected
ten
individuals
in
six
different
localities
Sardinia:
three
mountainous.

leaf
samples
hydrodistillated

Clevenger
apparatus
obtain
corresponding
oils.

oil
was
chemically
characterised
analyzed
by
gas
chromatography
coupled
mass
spectrometry.
Ninety
compounds
identified:

two
mainly
oils
studied
populations,
dolichodial
(E)-β-caryophyllene,
interest.
Statistical
analyses
showed
significant
differences
clustered
following
geographical
pattern
rather
than
simple
or
edaphic
grouping.
Taken
together
results
here
shown
shed
light
environmental
conditions
marum,
highlighting
clear
vs
clustering,
an
relevance,
especially
potential
utilization
as
environmental-friendly
insecticide.
