Abstract Self-driving vehicles (SDVs) will need to make decisions that carry ethical dimensions and are of normative significance. For example, by choosing a specific trajectory, they determine how risks distributed among traffic participants. Accordingly, policymakers, standardization organizations scholars have conceptualized what (shall) constitute(s) decision-making for SDVs. Eventually, these conceptualizations must be converted into system requirements ensure proper technical implementation. Therefore, this article aims translate critical recently formulated in scholarly work, existing standards, regulatory drafts guidelines an explicit five-step decision model SDVs during hazardous situations. This states precise sequence steps, indicates the guiding principles inform each step points out list terms demand further investigation specification. By integrating ethical, legal engineering considerations, we aim contribute debate on computational ethics (particularly autonomous driving) while offering practitioners automotive sector process is technically viable, legally permissible, ethically grounded adaptable societal values. In future, assessing actual impact, effectiveness admissibility implementing here sketched theories, overall requires empirical evaluation testing model.
