On the outskirts of Pinios dam reservoir (Ilia Regional Unit, Greece), a water treatment plant serves supply needs surrounding municipalities, in which high concentrations Fe and Mn, before treatment, have been observed. The main purpose this research was to investigate mechanism increased iron (Fe) manganese (Mn) levels dam, impacts its operation. A wide range hydrochemical sedimentological analyses were conducted over hydrological year, focusing on spatial temporal distribution Mn both sediment samples across established monitoring stations. Sediment from reservoir’s bottom revealed predominantly fine-grained material, rich total organic carbon, with elevated oxide levels. Significant seasonal variations also discovered, higher observed anoxic waters during dry season, attributed reduced conditions favoring dissolution Fe. Conversely, wet homogenization metal throughout column due oxygenation freshwater inflow. These outcomes confirmed by analysis, indicating that redox conditions, pH, temperature, as well presence matter, significantly influence mobility bioavailability these metals reservoir. findings study clarify concentration can be linked mineral composition upstream Neogene flysch formations area.
