ABSTRACT Aquaculture, especially fish farming, plays a critical role in sustainable food production worldwide, with human consumption of and products exceeding that capture fisheries. While aquatic species constitute an invaluable reserve biodiversity, the values biodiversity aquaculture remain largely unacknowledged. China is not only most significant consumer but also prominent contributor to global production. This study delineates characteristics 150 varieties approved for between 1996 2024, including diversity, habitat distribution, trophic level their germplasm resources, illustrate why matters our systems. Our results reveal increasing trend use native species, which inhabit diverse habitats occupy higher levels, cultivation novel aquaculture. We found 81 (54%) involved multiple resources 46 (30.7%) being interspecific. These observations emphasize reliance breeding on diversity fundamentally depend natural biodiversity. Taken together, practices adopted highlight significance conservation advancement
