Emerging
contaminants
(ECs),
encompassing
pharmaceuticals,
personal
care
products,
pesticides,
and
industrial
chemicals,
represent
a
growing
threat
to
ecosystems
human
health
due
their
persistence,
bioaccumulation
potential,
often-unknown
toxicological
profiles.
Addressing
these
challenges
necessitates
advanced
analytical
tools
capable
of
detecting
quantifying
trace
levels
ECs
in
complex
environmental
matrices.
This
review
highlights
the
pivotal
role
mass
spectrometry
(MS)
monitoring
ECs,
emphasizing
its
high
sensitivity,
specificity,
versatility
across
various
techniques
such
as
Gas
Chromatography-Mass
Spectrometry
(GC-MS),
Liquid
(LC-MS),
High-Resolution
Mass
(HR-MS).
The
application
MS
has
facilitated
real-time
detection
volatile
organic
compounds,
comprehensive
non-targeted
screening
unknown
contaminants,
accurate
quantification
diverse
matrices
including
water,
soil,
air.
Despite
effectiveness,
matrix
interferences,
lack
standardized
methodologies,
limited
spectral
libraries
persist.
However,
recent
advancements,
hybrid
systems
integration
artificial
intelligence
(AI),
are
paving
way
for
more
efficient
predictive
modeling
contaminant
behavior.
Continued
innovation
technologies
collaborative
efforts
essential
overcome
existing
ensure
sustainable
solutions
mitigating
risks
associated
with
emerging
contaminants.
