Although carbon dots (CDs) are widely used in the detection of heavy metal ions, rationally designing high-performance CDs for ion remains a significant challenge due to limited understanding their interaction mechanism. Here, we reveal excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and provide an effective strategy switching ESIPT by coordinating with ions. This work demonstrates that Zn2+ has strong coordination capacity toward CDs, while Mn2+ mildest mode can effectively sense other Reasonable design unique responses ions is achieved doping or regulate process.
