Although carbon dots (CDs) are widely used in the detection of heavy metal ions, rationally designing high-performance CDs for ion remains a significant challenge due to limited understanding their interaction mechanism. Here, we reveal excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and provide an effective strategy switching ESIPT by coordinating with ions. This work demonstrates that Zn2+ has strong coordination capacity toward CDs, while Mn2+ mildest mode can effectively sense other Reasonable design unique responses ions is achieved doping or regulate process. Therefore, fluorescent sensor array sensitive identification 10 kinds real samples constructed, which shows consistent results ICP-OES. deepens fundamental fluorescence mechanism opens new avenues rational tuning emissive process, provides simple yet reliable platform nanoprobes as well molecules.
