Ammonia has emerged as a promising carbon-free fuel for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. However, its application in practical combustion systems is limited by several issues including low heating value and slow flame propagation speed, which have posed challenges maintaining stable combustion. As an attempt to resolve these issues, we numerically investigated premixed ammonia–air using detailed chemical mechanism heat-recirculating, Swiss-roll burner that was proposed based on the concept of “excess-enthalpy.” The main focus put stabilizations well characteristics NO/N2O emissions across wide range operational conditions. results showed use led significantly broadened stability regime pure ammonia combustion, could be attributed effective preheating from products unburnt mixture. relationship between dimensionless heat transfer parameter excess-enthalpy quantified linear correlation revealed. As a new zero-carbon fuel, ammonia co-firing in coal-fired boilers is one of the feasible technologies for reducing carbon emission. This study validated an ammonia-coal simulation model using experimental data from 300 MW unit tangential firing boiler, and investigated impacts different injection methods (uniform injection, lower layer concentrated upper injection) at 20% ratio on boiler performance. Key findings include flow fields characteristics: uniform enhanced pattern, while pure burners modes exhibited weaker momentum compared to coal burners; combustion temperature fields: all three reduced peak furnace temperatures but increased flue gas outlet; burnout performance: inhibited burnout, whereas promoted it; NOx emissions: both emissions, significantly them. These conclusions provide critical guidance retrofitting power plant co-firing.
