Palm oil production is a major source of income for millions smallholders in Indonesia. However, actual yield remains low relation to the attainable yield. While emphasis has been given planting material as factor explaining smallholder fields, role agronomic management received less attention. We assessed palm productivity independent fields quantified gaps and their causes using data on fresh fruit bunch (FFB) practices collected over two years across 977 fields. The gap was estimated each field difference between latter crop model, local weather field-specific soil age. Statistical techniques were used identify factors gaps. Average represented 42% yield, with largest occurring young plantations. Our analyses identified gaps, including nutrient management, harvest interval, weed control, pruning. Improved can help increase profit existing There an opportunity produce more current plantation area via better agronomy, generating positive economic impact at national levels, while reducing pressure clear new land cultivation. Research & extension programs should be re-oriented give management.

Smallholders account for ca. 40% of oil palm area in Indonesia but average yield remains low. Despite higher overall fertilizer use compared with other Southeast Asian countries, poor plant nutrition has been identified as a major factor explaining gaps smallholder fields and little is known about the underlying management drivers. To assess nutrient identify entry points to narrow existing gap via improved nutrition. We assessed balances nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) inter-relationships between use, leaf concentration, yield, using data collected from 977 over two years. There was positive relationship rates, especially (K). Only half received rates fertilized represented 45% 83% 28% 25% associated removal harvested yield. Applied generally rich N P, K Mg, leading imbalances. Additionally, farmers did not follow appropriate practices on placement splits. Improving current supply needed increase yields profit. Current agricultural research programs will benefit re-orienting efforts improve pathway fields, which, turn, requires strengthening extension services fill knowledge tune subsidy facilitate farmer access sources more suited crop.

Indonesia is the most important oil palm producing country. Nearly 40% of planted area managed by smallholders, with yields well below potential. Efforts to increase productivity have focused on source planting material, little attention paid plant nutrition. To assess degree which current in smallholder fields limited nutrients scenarios distinct sources material. We collected detailed data leaf nutrient concentration from 30 derive minimum sampling size needed diagnose status. Subsequently, we yield and type 973 importance status material determination yield. Potassium (K) deficiency was widespread (88% fields) often severe. two thirds were also deficient for nitrogen (N) boron (B), half phosphorous (P) deficient, one third magnesium (Mg) deficient. Nutrient imbalances, especially between K N, common. Fields sufficient P, levels yielded 47% more (equivalent 1.2 t ha−1) than across entire range materials. conclude that improved nutrition increases fresh fruit irrespective The advantage certified reflected higher extraction rates. Increased existing plantations through offers opportunity improve profits livelihoods, whilst at same time increasing total production without bringing new areas into cultivation.
