ABSTRACT This study sets out to investigate the prospects for raising oil palm output in sub‐Saharan Africa, particularly Ghana, without further expansion of cropland. Given global concerns about palm's role deforestation and land use change, focus is on enhancing productivity existing farmlands. Utilizing a unique, nationally representative dataset 2046 farm households spanning 1987−2017, we evaluate current state production technologies efficiency their by families Ghana. The employs stochastic metafrontier framework account regional differences technology managerial capacity gauge performance these indicators across Ghana over three decades. Our findings indicate that, average, smallholder producers only 44% accessible stock technology, operating at an average 69%, with very low technical score 28% period. These suggest that had kept pace time decades, relative would have expanded 72%, leading savings 37% other uses. Consequently, greater potential growth lies technological advancement than farmers' ability efficiently technologies.
