In a hybrid zone between two tropical lekking birds, yellow male plumage of one species has introgressed asymmetrically replacing white another via sexual selection. Here, we present detailed analysis the trait to uncover its physical and genetic bases trace evolutionary history. We determine that carotenoid lutein underlies phenotype describe microstructural feather features likely enhance color appearance. These same reduce predicted water shedding capacity feathers, potential liability in tropics. Through genome-scale DNA sequencing hybrids each genus, identify BCO2 as major gene responsible for polymorphism. The tree genome-wide allele frequency patterns suggest carotenoid-pigmented collars initially arose third reached through historical flow. Complex interplay selection hybridization thus shaped phenotypes these species, where conspicuous traits are key reproductive success.

Abstract Differences in behaviour can play an important role the emergence of species and maintenance boundaries. In birds, behavioural isolation mechanisms range from simple vocalizations to elaborate courtship displays. The breakdown these could result production viable hybrid offspring. general, we might expect a negative relationship between complexity mechanism incidence hybridization. I tested this prediction manakins, Neotropical bird family that shows large variety compiled database reliable records quantified species-specific Binary logistic regressions indicated similarity was better predictor hybridization probability than complexity. However, pattern strongly influenced by phylogenetic relatedness, closely related exhibited similar displays were already being performed their common ancestor. main limitation study concerns incomplete dataset. assess for only 22 manakin species; consequently, not all combinations be included analyses. Nonetheless, findings provide insights into explaining patterns
