Abstract There are barriers to directly observing animals that cryptic or live in environments inaccessible humans. Biologgers, animal-attached devices designed collect data on without a human researcher present, have become useful tools for studying species cannot be observed. The use of biologgers has been size-limited until recent efforts miniaturize the technology opened up possibility using them small animals. In this study, we packaged and deployed proximity logging (“ProxLogs” model) small, socially monogamous, semifossorial mammal, Prairie Vole (Microtus ochrogaster), as means high-resolution fine-scale spatial between conspecifics. First, evaluated multiple packaging options found UV-curing epoxy resin containing grit (sand) was most durable material. ProxLogs recorded voles when they were within 6 cm each other. We compared resolution social collected by patterns through livetrapping and, expected, generated significantly higher-resolution than livetrapping. also predicted ProxLogs. Our findings provide proof concept loggers, with resin, reliable, method 24-h mammals otherwise difficult observe.

Many mammal species are thought to adopt solitary living owing mothers becoming intolerant of adult offspring and the occurrence social intolerance between adults. However, field studies on how mammals interact rare. Here we show that can occur without intolerance. Over 3 years, recorded interactions free-living bush Karoo rats (
