As one of the best sustainable approaches for visible-light production hydrogen (H2) to meet energy demands, semiconductor-based photocatalysis has received broad interest in recent decades. The fundamental restrictions graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a promising metal-free photocatalytic semiconductor water splitting, like insufficient harvesting and high electron–hole (e/h) pairs recombination, have limited its applications this goal. In regard, optical, charge separation, surface features g-C3N4 can be tuned via engineering C/N vacancies, which is reviewed here splitting by g-C3N4. Reports confirm that enhanced resulting from vacancies are helpful adsorption on surface, improving water-splitting kinetics. First Review, improvements structural optical characteristics introducing especially nitrogen will discussed illustrate better performance. Then, various strategies creating controlling reviewed. critical roles optimizing performance also described, finally advances defective oxidation addressed.

Abstract Heterogeneous photocatalysis has been considered one of the most attractive alternative routes to transforming naturally abundant, clean, and sustainable solar energy into chemical energy. Nowadays, popular heterogeneous photocatalyst, titanium dioxide, already found applications for water splitting produce hydrogen oxygen, degradation organic pollutants, air purification, creation self‐cleaning coatings. However, TiO 2 a significant limitation: large band gap (3.0–3.4 eV) that makes it impossible use anything other than ultraviolet illumination initiate photocatalytic processes. With focus on efficient solar‐energy utilization, development new photocatalysts are sensitive visible light is an important direction in theory practice photocatalysis. In this regard, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) route; they have emerged as interesting class materials photoreactions due their flexible tunability composition, structure, functional properties, along with facilitated adsorption towards chemicals absorption. Moreover, can be composed semiconductors heterojunctions (e.g., type‐II, Z‐scheme, S‐scheme), whose effectiveness photogenerated charge separation proven by many examples. The present critical review reports progress over last 5 years preparation activity framework‐based heterojunction pollutants. © 2022 Society Chemical Industry (SCI).
