This study evaluates whether pumped hydro storage (PHS) systems are economically competitive compared to natural gas thermal power plants in meeting peak load demand Brazil and identifies the barriers challenges that hinder their widespread adoption. It also examines strategies, market mechanisms, policy implications necessary improve economic operational viability of PHS, enabling greater integration variable renewable energy sources into Brazilian system. Using levelized cost electricity (LCOE) method, PHS is with thermoelectric for scenarios Brazil. The results simulations indicate viable operations exceeding seven hours per day, offering lower costs. In contrast, technologies more cost-effective shorter operations. provide two key contributions: they characterise basic conditions under which than demand, propose a methodology calculating LCOE analysed technological options, tailored market. conclusions highlight potential contribute Brazil’s sustainable transition, provided appropriate policies implemented. These especially crucial where not competitive, ensure compensation mechanisms flexibility services implementation carbon pricing. Additionally, retrofitting existing hydropower incorporate components may reduce costs mitigate environmental impacts constructing new facilities.
