Abstract Aquarium fish keeping is an incredibly popular hobby. Despite this popularity, fishes can suffer poor welfare due to being housed in inappropriate environment, lack of owner knowledge that perpetuates misconceptions, and our perception them as “lower vertebrates”. This article examines the complexity biology behaviour support appropriate care within home aquaria. It focuses on importance evidence for what need how use such domestic aquarium. In UK, around 21% households maintain indoor aquarium 13% have outdoor pond. equates many millions individual private households. Approximately 70% aquaria are tropical freshwater species. Although may appear easy pets keep, cheap buy readily available different outlets, common-in-the-home-aquarium species specific requirements (from their water chemistry, physical social grouping) they require thrive, owners should be aware natural wild ecology when setting up maintaining a group. Inaccuracies misrepresentations abound non-specialists think about fishes; no memory, only grow size tank provided with, do not feel pain therefore disposable. Fishes complex physiologies enable live environment alien us terrestrial mammals. They also display diverse array behaviours provide with fitness benefits habitat. Alongside essential considerations (heating, filtration, quality), suitably enriched housed. case study considers simple steps take improve welfare, health, longevity through better history, provision more ecologically relevant maintenance correct groupings.
