This study aimed to evaluate the effects of tactile stimulation on calf welfare. A total 54 Nellore calves were assessed, with 28 them receiving (WTS) for ~60 s and 26 serving as a control. Five body movements seven facial expressions scored. Heart rates (HRs) recorded in three situations: when placed lateral recumbency (HR1), during identification procedures (HR2), after completion (HR3). The differences between HR3 HR1, well HR2 calculated. Initial weaning weights recorded, ADG adjusted 240 days determined. Tactile significantly influenced “head movements”, “third eyelid” exposure, “eye-opening”, “strained nostrils”. Except nostrils”, WTS exhibited higher scores these behavioral categories. Treatment also difference (p < 0.05) showed trend HR1 0.06). qualitative behavior assessment (QBA) was applied using expressions. Two main principal components identified, PC1 explaining 63.01% data variance reflecting calves’ emotionality, PC2 19.88% excitability. Most displayed positive emotional states high excitability, whereas most NTS opposite. did not impact indexes long-term performance indicators > 0.05). We conclude that newborn their initial handling has potential enhance short-term welfare, but only limited extent.
