Sensory impairments and loneliness among older Europeans: Insights from a cross-national longitudinal study

Abstract
Sensory
impairments
are
linked
to
loneliness,
but
the
reasons
not
well
understood.
This
study
aims
investigate
associations
between
sensory
and
loneliness
over
time,
considering
sex,
age,
European
regions,
examine
mediating
roles
of
activity
participation,
activities
daily
living
(ADL),
depressive
symptoms,
quality
life
(QoL),
cognitive
function,
social
network.
We
conducted
a
cohort
83,329
Europeans
aged
50
+
years,
participating
in
at
least
two
waves
Survey
Health,
Ageing
Retirement
Europe
(SHARE)
from
2011–2022.
Loneliness
was
measured
on
scale
3–9.
Mixed-effects
regression
models
with
sex-interactions,
adjusting
for
socio-demographic
factors
medical
history,
were
used.
Compared
those
good
vision
hearing,
individuals
impairment
(VI)
(coef.
=
0.12,
95%
CI:
0.10;
0.14),
hearing
(HI)
0.11,
0.08;
dual
(DSI)
0.28,
0.25;
0.31)
had
higher
risk
loneliness.
Dose-response
relationships
observed
all
associations.
Most
consistent
across
sex
age
groups,
association
HI
strongest
females
up
79
years
only
males
thereafter.
Associations
varied
Europe,
Northern
VI
HI.
For
DSI,
mainly
mediated
by
participation
(17.4%),
symptoms
(17.3%),
QoL
(16.6%).
To
mitigate
effect
particularly
limitations
should
be
targeted.
