Ensuring water security and enabling timely responses to contamination events in distribution systems (WDSs) rely heavily on the accurate localization of sources. Despite advances quality monitoring technologies, such as continuous sensing grab-sampling, coverage remains sparse most WDSs, making it difficult accurately pinpoint source contamination. This paper introduces a novel methodology designed overcome these challenges by integrating with targeted manual grab-sampling. The proposed approach iteratively narrows down set probable sources applying heuristics that account for timing signals from sensor measurements. To further address uncertainty inherent localization, generates probabilistic over potential locations. highlights areas requiring closer attention guides where subsequent samples should be collected, effectively reducing process. methodology's performance is validated through extensive analysis, demonstrating combining fixed sensors adaptive sampling significantly improves precision, accuracy, speed, particularly networks. use technology research needed optimize its effectiveness improving WDS maximizing public health protection.

Abstract A significant challenge when attempting to regulate the spatial-temporal concentration of a disinfectant in water distribution network is large and uncertain delay between time that chemical injected at input node measured monitoring output nodes. Uncertain delays are due varying flows, which depend mainly on consumer demands. Existing approaches cannot guarantee will remain within specified range output, even though bounds time-delay uncertainty may be known. In this work, given bounded water-flow uncertainty, we use input–output modeling approach develop scheduling methodology guarantees concentration. The proposed creates an model characterization by utilizing estimated water-quality states using backtracking approach. An optimization problem formulated solved find schedule keeps predefined for horizon. Simulation results two case studies where demands varied ±20% their nominal value show scheduler able avoid lower bound violations
