ABSTRACT Egg recognition is one of the most common strategies utilized by host birds to combat brood parasitism. Eggshell surface features (e.g., eggshell color and spots) are important cues for egg recognition, enabling avian hosts recognize reject foreign eggs. The barn swallow ( Hirundo rustica ), as cuckoo Cuculus canorus has demonstrated variation in their rejection propensity geographically. However, it remains unclear whether spots play an role recognition. To this end, study examined two populations swallows. Our results revealed that both Danzhou Dongfang populations, rate swallows spotted eggs was significantly lower than without spots, suggesting spot signaling plays a pivotal during process findings also indicated shape (ovoid vs. round) did not affect This likely because round deviate from egg‐shaped properties, causing inability distinguish difference shape.
