Abstract Sensitivity to rhythmic and prosodic cues in speech has been described as a precursor of language acquisition. Consequently, atypical processing during infancy early childhood considered risk factor for developmental disorders. Despite many behavioural studies, the neural not yet explored children with disorder (DLD). Here we utilise EEG investigate by 9-year-old without DLD. In current study, phase entrainment, angular velocity, power, event related potentials (ERPs), phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) phase-phase (PPC), at three frequency bands selected on basis prior literature, delta, theta low gamma. We predicted different entrainment delta band DLD, also cross-frequency possibly gamma-band responses. Contrary prediction, DLD demonstrated significant equivalent control children. However, only showed gamma band. The exhibited significantly more power compared children, there was difference velocity between two groups. Finally, group resultant analyses that low-frequency (delta theta) affected oscillations differently group. These data show important differences mechanisms underpinning speech. findings are discussed terms auditory theories particularly Temporal Sampling theory.

Foraging, hysteresis and inertia: understanding the developmental dynamics of real-world attention control. DOI

During the early years of life, we develop capacity to choose what pay attention and ignore. This enables us flexibly regulate perception action guide strategic behaviour in complex, dynamic environments. Through this, determine not just experience from world, but also state that are when each new piece information reaches us. Real-world control has two dimensions: shift attention, where it to. Here, concentrate on former, examining how temporal dynamics real-world change through during period experimental evidence suggests for is beginning emerge. We discuss that, even development, shifts visual triggered both periodically, aperiodically. Evidence multiple sources settings emerges life. But this only part picture. Increasingly states start self-sustaining non-linear attractor dynamics, known as inertia, characterised by coupling between an observer their environment. these caused transient, mutually self-amplificatory interactions engagement, comprehension distractibility. And ‘attention de-coupling’ – i.e. mind-wandering ‘sticky fixation’ can dynamics. emergence endogenous a cause, consequence, transient periods engagement individual world outside. Finally, practical implications directions future work.
