Zoos play a vital role in conservation with an overall aim of preserving species, such as the okapi (Okapi johnstoni), from extinction. To ensure species survival, sustainable ex-situ populations are required, and therefore understanding reproductive status individuals is important for population management. In this study, oestrous cycles gestations four (n=7 pregnancies) were monitored through non-invasive faecal sampling methods to quantify progestagen oestrogen metabolites. Baseline criteria determining was developed using approximately 20 months each two non-pregnant females, before being applied pre- early conception data. Pre-conception characterised females luteal phase (mean ± SD) 8.47 1.41 days (n=59) inter-luteal 7.38 ±1.67 (n=58), average cycle length 15.83 ±2.02 (n=54 full only). Observed all metabolite peaks occurred at beginning metabolites decreasing. Gestation confirmed when concentrations remained least days, remaining level first 120 gestation without return baseline values. A secondary increase around 150 lasted until parturition. These data demonstrate that exhibit similar other members giraffidae family, oestrogens time indicating ovulation occurs while progestagens still elevated. Furthermore, we have shown routine sample collection hormone monitoring, can be within trimester, which benefit management populations.

This study examines the Japanese zoo staff’s initial skepticism and bewilderment regarding animal welfare environmental enrichment in mid-1990s. Utilizing a 2001 questionnaire conducted by Association of Zoos Aquariums existing literature reveals that this resistance stemmed from inadequate information, cultural history, legal perspectives on care. Specifically, was initially misunderstood as an exhibition strategy, partly due to post-WWII trends mobile zoos views animals non-sentient under Japan’s Animal Protection Law. The research highlights early hurdles adopting non-Western settings, aiming provide insights for other regions dealing with similar transitional challenges. It also addresses misperceptions about context empathetic relationships professional ethics zoology, offering into facing issues. Additionally, paper discusses progression practices related managerial challenges, acknowledging institutional factors. Despite regional differences, aims contribute understanding improving universal acceptance application welfare.
