Abstract Effective conservation requires a variety of perspectives that center on different ways knowing. Disciplinary diversity and inclusion (DDI) offers an important means integrating knowing into pressing challenges. However, DDI more than multiple disciplinary approaches to conservation; cognitive epistemic justice are key. In 2020, the Inclusion Task Force was formed via grassroots movement Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) assess extent chart path increase DDI. First, we assessed past present SCB governance documents. Next, surveyed current members ( n = 577). Finally, nonmember conservationists 213). Members who were not biological scientists perceived as less diverse (21.4% vs. 16%) equitable (21.8% 161%), and, although majority (44) nonmembers reported their work aligned reasonably well with mission SCB, they thought organization focused sciences. Despite SCB's be inclusive, realizing this will likely require epistemological shifting from top‐down models knowledge transfer. centering DDI, can achieve its aspirations connecting across disciplines foster practices. We recommend other organizations develop mechanisms recruitment retention leadership expand strategic partnerships flatten hierarchies promote inclusivity.
