Abstract Polyvagal Theory (PVT) has emerged as a conceptual framework for both understanding autonomic nervous system function and regulating physiological emotional responses (Porges, S. (2022). Theory: A science of safety. Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience 16, 871227. doi: https://doi.org/10.3389/fnint.2022.871227).

Psychotherapists have accumulated much wisdom about people their relationships, on observation fine-tuned feedback from therapy always known that relational stress high levels arousal impact intimate communication difficult moments – it slows information processing, makes harder to read facial cues likely we become preoccupied with our own affective state, along a self-defensive impediment listening. Our increased knowledge these states helps guide therapist client effective action. It is my contention systemic training needs include physiology anatomy as core part learning.
