In this study, the effect of nine types biochar generated from three different feedstocks on anaerobic digestion (AD) sewage sludge was investigated. The obtained results indicated that methane production could be significantly enhanced by all used in test. maximum cumulative yield 218.45 L per kg VS for culture with corn straws pyrolyzed at 600 °C which also exhibited largest specific surface area. Adding an appropriate amount beneficial to improve yield, while excessive addition inhibit AD process. Biochar enhance process stability increasing buffering capacity, releasing volatile fatty acid accumulation and alleviating ammonia inhibition. Simultaneously, microbial community analysis revealed able diversity archaeal adjust communities. It notable treatment facilitated aceticlastic methanogens (Methanosarcina) compared hydrogenotrophic methanogens. Overall, ideal approach is not only expected successfully performance AD, but lay a new path future biomass energy utilization.

The mutual nutritional cooperation underpinning syntrophic propionate degradation provides a scant amount of energy for the microorganisms involved, so often acts as bottleneck in methanogenic systems. Understanding ecology, physiology and metabolic capacities propionate-oxidizing bacteria (SPOB) is interest both engineered natural ecosystems, it offers prospects to guide further development technologies biogas production biomass-derived chemicals, important forecasting contributions by biogenic methane emissions climate change. SPOB are distributed across different phyla. They can exhibit broad capabilities addition syntrophy (e.g. fermentative, sulfidogenic acetogenic metabolism) demonstrate variations interplay with cooperating partners, indicating nuances their lifestyle. In this review, we discuss distinctions gene repertoire organization methylmalonyl-CoA pathway, hydrogenases formate dehydrogenases, emerging facets (formate/hydrogen/direct) electron transfer mechanisms. We also use information from cultivations, thermodynamic calculations omic analyses basis identifying environmental conditions governing oxidation various ecosystems. Overall, review improves basic applied understanding highlights knowledge gaps, hopefully encouraging future research engineering on metabolism biotechnological processes.
