Free ammonia (FA) can pose inhibitory and/or biocidal effects on a variety of microorganisms involved in different biological wastewater treatment process, which is widely presented plants (WWTPs) due to the high levels ammonium systems. This review article gives up-to-date status several essential roles FA processes: impacts FA, mechanisms roles, modeling impacts, and implications for treatment. Specifically, both sludge lines were firstly summarized, including nitrification, denitrification, anaerobic oxidation (Anammox), enhanced phosphorus removal processes. The then analyzed, indicated inhibition slow specific microbial activities or even reconfigure community structure, likely negative intracellular pH, enzymes extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), thus causing cell inactivation/lysis. Mathematical models describing impact processes also explored facilitate process optimization. Finally, key identified, that be leveraged substantially enhance biodegradability secondary sludge, would further improve nutrient renewable energy production.

In plant cells, ammonium is considered the most convenient nitrogen source for cell metabolism. However, despite being preferred N form microalgae, at higher concentrations, it can be toxic, and cause growth inhibition. Microalgae’s tolerance to depends on species, with various taxa showing different thresholds of tolerability symptoms toxicity. environment, high concentrations represents a dangerous pollutant. It affect water quality, causing numerous environmental problems, including eutrophication downstream waters. For this reason, important treat wastewater remove nutrients before discharging into rivers, lakes, or seas. A valid sustainable alternative conventional treatments could provided by coupling nutrient removal from production valuable biomass. This review focused its importance in algal nutrition, but also problematic presence aquatic systems such as wastewaters. The aim work provide recent information exploitation microalgae role
