Up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor belongs to high-rate systems, able perform reaction at reduced hydraulic retention time, if compared traditional digesters. In this review, the most recent advances in UASB applications are critically summarized and discussed, with outline on critical aspects for further possible future developments. Beside treatment of soluble biodegradable substrates, research is actually focusing refractory slowly degradable matrices, thanks an improved understanding microbial community composition hydrodynamics, together utilization powerful modeling tools. Innovative approaches include use nitrogen removal, as well hydrogen volatile fatty acid production. Co-digestion complementary substrates available same territory being extensively studied increase biogas yield provide smooth continuous operations a circular economy perspective. Particular importance given decentralized treatment, electricity heat local users integration other renewable energies. Proper pre-treatment application increases yield, while successive post-treatment needed meet required effluent standards, also from toxicological An increased full-scale technology desirable achieve sustainability scopes, efficient exploitation, fulfilling energy targets green-house gases emission reduction, particular tropical countries, where limited heating required.

Abstract This review assesses the leachate quality from waste disposal sites in tropical climate zone. Through this review, data 228 samples 145 18 countries region were analyzed. The 12 types of considered for analysis based on climatic conditions, age, and operating condition site. Tropical rainforest, monsoon, savanna climates identified zone classification. Age site was classified as young old. conditions engineered landfill open dump Eighteen parameters included analysis. Leachate pollution index indicated that rainforest monsoon have higher potential, while potential did not demonstrate considerable difference terms age landfill. Considering method sites, dumpsites pose potential. Positive correlation could be seen among biological oxygen demand, chemical total dissolved solids, Kjeldahl nitrogen. pH negatively correlated with organic pollutants well heavy metals. Analysis emerging contaminants present is limited region; thus, it recommended to conduct studies contaminants. Further, treatment options are discussed review.

Leachate usually includes toxic organic and inorganic pollutants, heavy metals, ammonia nitrogen compounds, other dissolved suspended contaminants. Careful management of landfill leachate (LFL) is essential to reduce quantity prevent the unfortunate fate contamination. In contrast solid waste incinerators, LFL disposal has serious ecological health impacts in most developing countries, mainly associated with groundwater, soil, air pollution. This could be attributed absence cost-effective treatment technology or ideal guidelines by cities/municipalities. Therefore, evaluation sustainable managing collection are highly recommended. review describes classification composition leachates, factors affecting production, conventional (current) options for LFLs. Procedures aerobic anaerobic biological employing microbial operated separately combination along physiochemical processes also discussed. examines prospects methods/techniques, how economize methods (e.g., pretreatment) using readiness level technology, recycling sorting technology.
