A great amount of biowastes, comprising byproducts and biomass wastes, is originated yearly from the agri-food industry. These biowastes are commonly rich in proteins polysaccharides mainly discarded or used for animal feeding. As regulations aim to shift a fossil-based bio-based circular economy model, also being employed producing materials. This may involve their use high-value applications therefore remarkable revalorization those resources. The present review summarizes main sources protein co-products industry (i.e., wheat gluten, potato, zein, soy, rapeseed, sunflower, protein, casein, whey, blood, gelatin, collagen, keratin, algae concentrates), assessing bioplastic application food packaging coating, controlled release active agents, absorbent superabsorbent materials, agriculture, scaffolds) which they have been more extensively produced. most common wet dry processes produce protein-based materials described compression molding, injection extrusion, 3D-printing, casting, electrospinning), as well characterization techniques mechanical rheological properties, tensile strength tests, thermal characterization, optical properties). In this sense, strategy be agricultural applications, converge with zero-waste approach, seems remarkably attractive sustainability prospect (including environmental, economic, social angles). approach allows envisioning reduction some impacts along product life cycle, contributing tackling transition toward economy.
